Bobbi Kristina Brown is “awake” after spending months in a coma, her father told concertgoers in Dallas on Saturday.
“I can say today, my baby’s awake. She’s watching me,” Bobby Brown said at the event, according to a video recording of the comments that were posted online by his sister.
It is the first sign that the 22-year-old daughter of Whitney Houston might be improving after she was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub in her Georgia home on Jan. 31.
In an effort to save her life, Bobbi Kristina Brown was placed in a medically induced coma, where she has apparently remained for several months.
In late March she was transferred from Emory University Hospital to a rehabilitation center to continue her treatment — a sign that her family and doctors were preparing for a lengthy recovery process.
In recent weeks, Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother acknowledged that her condition had not improved much.
“She’s the same. [We’ve] moved her now to a place for rehabilitation,” Cissy Houston said in a radio interview with WBLS 107.5. “You know, still not a great deal of hope.”
Houston’s comments were some of the only remarks made about Bobbi Kristina’s condition by members of that side of the family. Bobbi Kristina Brown is the only child of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown; the couple divorced in 2007.
By contrast, members of the Brown family have been relatively vocal, calling for prayers for their young relative on social media and in interviews.
Bobby Brown’s sister, Tina Brown, was responsible for publicizing this most recent update on her ailing relative’s condition and noted the “terrible rumors circulating for months” about Bobbi Kristina.
Some of those rumors, however, appear to have come from within the family itself.
At one point, in one of the last official statements to come from Bobby Brown, a lawyer representing him advised reporters to disregard comments from certain family members who were not authorized to speak publicly about Bobbi Kristina’s condition.
Bobby Brown has not yet officially released a statement confirming his daughter’s condition after he made those comments on Saturday.
