Niger
State governor, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has again insisted that President
Goodluck Jonathan entered into single term agreement and failure of the
agreement led to the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last
elections.
Consequently,
Aliyu said that (PDP) members saw the defeat coming and it came to pass by wide
margins in all elections by the PDP.
Aliyu
who was a special guest of honour at a convocation lecture organised by the
Federal University of Technology, Minna, yesterday at the permanent site of the
University, Gidan Kwanu Minna, declared that “many of us saw it coming, when I
reminded us that we had an agreement for one term, they nearly crucified me,
and when I led the G7 governors, they did not do what we wanted them to do
until five members left, and they later did what we asked them to do.”
According
him, “I recall also that when the APC came on board, I was the first person to
say I was very happy that now we have a strong party to put PDP on its toes and
many people were asking me I was really a member up to the last election; my
accusation has always been that I was a supporter of APC and now you have seen
the result.”
He
explained further that besides the fundamental factors that led to the failure
of the PDP, it was obvious that “Nigerians wanted a change and Nigerians got
the change” because the PDP has been around for 16 years making the party prone
to mistakes.
The
governor however posited that these factors will enable the party to understand
the situation and guide people next time on what to do reiterating that “even
when I told some of us (PDP members) that we had a one-term agreement, they nearly
crucified me. Now, sir (turning to Prof Ahmed Alkali the Pro-Chancellor of the
university) you have seen the results.”
Speaking
on the lecture, “The Role of Law in the Enhancement of Socio-Economic Growth of
the Nation,” Governor Aliyu noted that it is not only government officials that
are corrupt hence corruption starts from the home front. He gave an instance
where a junior civil servant with two wives and over 20 children also breed
corruption because there is no way his salary can take care of those children.
