Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina, has emerged the 8th President of of Africa Development Bank (AfDB) after a keenly contested election in Abidjan.
He defeated other candidates from Chad, Zimbabwe, and Cape Verde who also contested for the job.
Adesina emerged winner after scoring 58.50 percent of the total vote cast exceeding the 50 percent requirement. He scored 60.50 percent of regional vote.
Adesina’s nearest rival, the Chadian candidate got 31.62 percent of total vote cast and 36.63 percent of regional vote.
The only female candidate in the contest from Cape Verde got 10.27 percent overall vote and 2.87 percent of regional vote.
He takes over from incumbent president Donald Kaberuka whose second term will end in August.
Adesina, 55, will assume office on 1 September 2015.
Mr. Adesina is the outgoing Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development for Nigeria. He has been in the post since 2010. He is a supporter of the Green Revolution in Africa. As a minister, Adesina transformed the Nigerian agricultural sector.
He holds a PhD in agricultural economics. Having experienced poverty first hand, Adesina’s goal is to bring hope and prosperity to all African people. He is seen as the man who could boost the rural economy and strengthen regional trade.
