Here are just some of the terrible facts behind the Holocaust:
Jewish people were force to live in specially selected areas known as ghettos. The largest was Warsaw, where 400,000 Jews were crowded into 1.3 square miles of the city.

The first concentration camp was established at Dachau, near Munich, on March 23, 1933.
The Belzec, Chelmno, Sobibor, and Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau (aka Auschwitz) death camps were built in occupied Poland.

Majdanek was unusual - both for its huge size and the fact it lay close to residential suburbs of Lublin. A total of 78,000 people died at the camp, 58,000 of whom were Jewish.
Over 1.1 million people were murdered at the Auschwitz death camp - over 90% of those victims were Jewish.

At the Chelmno camp people were murdered in gas vans. Around two million people were killed in this way - almost nobody survived.
By the end of the Holocaust, six million men, women and children had died in ghettos, mass-shootings, concentration camps and extermination camps.
