The Chairperson, Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Sen. Binta Masi, has urged Christians to participate more actively in politics to bring about the desired change in the political space.
Masi made the call at the National Conscience Conference organised by the Buildman Foundation of the Summit Bible Church Abuja on Saturday. Senator Binta Masi Garba “In spite of the challenges encountered in politics, Christians should not be discouraged. Once you have God by your side, everything will pave way,” she said.
She said that with such a programme organised by the church, politics was taking a new dimension in the country.
The lawmaker further called on Christians to renew their minds to bring about the needed change in the polity. She, however, noted that the church could determine who our leaders would be once they participated actively in politics.
Also speaking, Speaker House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara said “Christians must bring about the consciousness of the system of government in heaven on earth.” Dogara was represented by Deputy Chairman House Committee on Media and Publicity, Hon. Jonathan Gbwefi.
The speaker said: “We are ambassadors of heaven on earth to colonise the earth to conform with the heavenly system of governance in Nigeria.
“I pray that this conference will help in the reawakening of our conscience to conform with our core values as Christians. “And, reflect them over the system of governance in our country to bring about the heavenly system of governance in Nigeria.”
In his presentation, Mr. Ndeche Okechukwu, the Director of Planning and Monitoring, Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), urged youths to engage in active politics to bring about innovation.
He also encouraged individuals to make use of the opportunity of independent candidacy as voted by the Senate in the Constitution amendment process.
“The Nigerian Senate had voted to alter the Constitution to allow independent candidates to contest elections. I urge youths to utilise this opportunity if equally passed by the House of Representatives,” he said.
He added that to ensure sanity in the electoral process, electoral offenders should be prosecuted. Speaking on the vision behind the conference which is its second edition, the host and Senior Pastor, Summit Bible Church Abuja, Dr Andy Osakwe said it was a conscience-rooted reformatory movement.
“The conference deals with a cultural revolution in Nigeria that believes in wide spread peace. We believe in the church to cause the transformation then we can achieve national transformation,” he said.
Osakwe said that God was counting on Christians to bring about the much needed change in the country. “Having the mind of Jesus Christ is the solution to Nigeria’s political problems. “We must go beyond being Christians to having the mind of Christ to be able to govern our nation, Nigeria,” he said.
